You can monetize your website with affiliations/associations, advertising, and by bartering space or text links for goods or services you need.

USE AFFILIATIONS AND ASSOCIATIONS JUDICIOUSLY.

Refer your visitors to related, but not competing, businesses or services for additional compensation. The original model is Amazon.com. They process the orders, handle the products, and even keep track of your referrals and send your commissions directly to your bank account. Many businesses and groups related to writing and books have similar arrangements. Another possibility is to offer a related, but noncompetitive, book by another author.

SELL TASTEFUL ADVERTISING.

Paid advertisements can mix with the associate and affiliate links for additional income. Ads with attractive graphic elements might even improve your page's appearance. Don't forget to raise your advertising rates as the number of visitors to your website increases. Signing up for Google's Adsense is even easier. You have to share the revenue with Google, of course, but you eliminate the need to find advertisers, set rates, and do the bookkeeping and billing. When your website's statistics top 2 million visitors a month who arrive from search engines, you can sign up for Overture ads, Yahoo's system similar to Google's. Many other ad delivery services exist, some designed specifically for blogs, another beneficial element often found on writers' websites.

BARTER SPACE FOR GOODS AND SERVICES.

Bartering works just as well in the digital world as in real life. What do you have to offer? Space on your website for advertising and links, referrals, mentions, recommendations. In trade you may receive material goods or needed services. Another possibility is to negotiate a reduced rate, for example, for optimizing your website for search engines. Reducing expenses is almost as good as income.
